Every Wildflower Has a Story to Tell

The mythology of wildflowers growing and blooming in Britain is unique. We enjoy their beauty every spring, but how much do we know about them?

5. Foxglove

This flower has plenty of nicknames. Some of them are witch’s thimble, fairy petticoat, fairy cap, and folksglove. It is a mystical plant. It was believed that foxes put the blossoms on their paws which helped them sneak into henhouses and steal chickens. Scandinavians say that fairies would ring the blossoms to warn foxes that there are hunters around.

6. Marigold

In Mexico people celebrate the Day of the Dead. This is a special event during which citizens adorn streets with marigolds because they believe that these flowers guide the dead with their nice aroma and bright petals. In the UK people stuffed the flower into pillows. Some would infuse them with water and even rub the flowers into the eyelids to gain psychic power. In Wales think that a storm is approaching if marigolds are still closed in the morning.
