6. São Bento
The church and monastery of São Bento can be found on the hill situated above the harbor. The structure belongs to one of the most refine Benedictine buildings in Brazil. The original looked different. Back then in 1617 it had no aisles, but in the 17th century it was enlarged – 8 side chapels were added. The interior was decorated by the best artists of those times. The works of Domingos da Conceição, a monk, who took part in the process, are exceptionally impressive. He covered the ceiling and walls with exuberant carving. The figures of St. Scholastica and St. Benedict will definitely make you wonder how it was even possible to create such beauty.
