Financial situations that involve other people can be sticky. Learn to solve the problems more easily:

1. Responding to Curious Questions

Issue: Someone curious asks how much you paid for your house, car, food, shoes or clothes. You know it’s none of their business.

Solution: This is rather an invasive question. You are not supposed to answer it. This question should not bother other people. It’s as if they asked you how often you have sex with your partner. Feel free to let people know that you are not willing to discuss your expenses, prices and income. People should know that you have your own policy and rules. There is no need to discuss your finances and budget with other people. The money is yours and you do not have to account for it. It’s all right to say that you are satisfied with your purchase, although it cost you slightly more than it should have. Then change the topic and discuss the weather or something that is not related to money.

2. Splitting the Bill

Issue: The check is on the table. You had a glass of mineral water and your friend had a coffee, a second course and a dessert.

Solution: If the difference is insignificant, splitting the bill is not an issue at all. If the difference is huge, there are two options. You either do not mind splitting the bill or you mind paying more than you should. If the company of friends includes a dozen people who order steaks, expensive wine and various side dishes with appetizers and desserts and you are the only one who orders a cup of green tea, then splitting the bill evenly might feel unfair. Do not hesitate to pay just for your own order in this case. This is your right. You are not supposed to feel embarrassed or ashamed in such a situation. Let the guys know that you are not here to cover their expenses.
